MANDOON BILYA BIOBLITZ: 13 - 19 OCTOBER 2025
Mandoon Bilya BioBlitz is a free community event to celebrate the incredible ecosystem of the Mandoon Bilya (Helena River).
The BioBlitz is part of our BoorYul-Bah-Bilya program, which is all about restoring river health, reinvigorating cultural heritage, and building community connection to rivers. It will include:
BioBlitz Events: A week of BioBlitz activities from Monday 13 October – Sunday 19 October at public parks along the lower river.
River Festival: A free community festival on Saturday 18 October at Mundaring Sculpture Park with speakers, performances, family activities, giveaways and community stalls.
To get involved, join our project on the iNaturalist app: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/mandoon-bilya-bioblitz-festival-2025
If you’re a local community group and would like a free stall at the festival, send us an email on manager@bibbul.org

WHAT IS A BIOBLITZ?
A BioBlitz is a snapshot study where scientists and the community work together to survey and record as many plant and animal species as possible at a location within a specified timeframe.
BioBlitz are becoming a frequently used large-scale citizen science field event in Australia. They provide a platform for increasing environmental awareness while delivering education and collecting biodiversity data. For more information, visit The Australian BioBlitz Hub.
The Mandoon Bilya BioBlitz will allow us to collect lots of important biodiversity data, build our knowledge of the river’s ecological values, and encourage participation in community-led conservation.
It will support our BoorYul-Bah-Bilya program and related initiatives including the proposed Mandoon Bilya Regional Riverpark and community catchment plan, and inform future river restoration efforts.
MANDOON BILYA BIOBLITZ EVENTS
In partnership with Edith Cowan University’s School of Science, we are hosting a week of guided BioBlitz events with local schools and community groups at parks along the lower river.
Participants will learn from Noongar Elders and scientists about the river’s significance and its ecological and cultural values.
We also need the community’s help to collect as much biodiversity data as possible during the BioBlitz week (13-19 October 2025)! Get involved by:
- Visiting local parks along the lower river
- Recording the plants and animals you find in the iNaturalist app
Check out the iNaturalist website for more information.

mandoon bilya bioblitz locations
The BioBlitz is focused on the lower Mandoon Bilya (Helena River) to align with our proposed Mandoon Bilya Regional Riverpark project.
Much of the lower river is inaccessible due to private property or safety concerns, so BioBlitz activities can only be undertaken at public parks where it is safe to do so, such as:
- Kings Meadow Reserve, Guildford 6055
- Helena River Parklands, Guildford 6055
- River Bank Reserve, South Guildford 6055
- Holmesdale Park, Woodbridge 6056
- Opposite Broz Park, Helena Valley 6056
- Riverside Park, Helena Valley 6056
Tread carefully, leave only footprints and take only iNaturalist observations!
